The Journal of Gastrointestinal Infections (JGI) is a peer-reviewed journal being published under the auspices of the Gastro Intestinal Society of India (GISI). It is issued once a year at present, but will be biannual in the future. The Journal aims at ensuring effective communication of research in various aspects of gastroenterology infections and providing continuing medical education, where concepts and strategies for managing critical patients are evolving rapidly.
The journal will cover studies related to gastrointestinal (GI) infections. The Journal of Gastrointestinal Infections is devoted to the dissemination of new knowledge concerning the various aspects of human infections and infestations associated with GI tract. The journal will publish peer- reviewed original research papers, case reports, systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Current reports can be submitted as brief communications which must include review of current literature, clinical details, outcome and follow up. Letters to the editor must be a comment on or pertain to a manuscript already published in the journal or in relation to preliminary communication of a larger study. The journal will also regularly publish Review articles, Special Articles or Guest Editorials on various topics in GI infections, accepted on invitation. But those who are desirous of submitting a review article, special article or guest editorial are required to send a one page outline to the Editor-in-Chief.
The manuscripts will be reviewed for possible publication with the understanding that they are being submitted solely to JGI and have not been published, simultaneously submitted or already accepted for publication elsewhere. The registered articles will be initially reviewed by the Editorial Board to judge their suitability for publication and then sent for peer review. Manuscripts with insufficient originality, serious scientific and technical flaws or lack of a significant message will be rejected. All accepted manuscripts will be suitably edited before publication and print proof will be sent to the corresponding author which has to be returned within 2 days. Corrections received after that period may not be included. The contributors will be informed about the acceptance/rejection of manuscript.
1. ETHICAL GUIDELINES
Authors are expected to adhere to the highest ethical standards. Approval of the Institute Ethical Committees both for human and animal studies must be taken. Informed consent must be taken in writing from each patient participant.
All authors of a manuscript must have agreed to its submission and are responsible for its content (initial submission and any subsequent versions), including appropriate citations and acknowledgments, and must also have agreed that the corresponding author has the authority to act on their behalf in all matters pertaining to publication of the manuscript. For a study from a single institute the number of contributors should not exceed six. For a case-report, brief communication, letter to the editor and review article the number of contributors should not exceed four. A justification should be included, if the number of contributors exceeds these limits. Once submitted the order of authorship cannot be changed without written consent of all the contributors. All the authors should submit an undertaking in the format specified by the journal indicating their consent to agree upon the authorship in the sequence indicated on the title page as well as the undertaking.
To maintain and protect the GISI's ownership and rights and to continue to afford scientists the opportunity to publish in high-quality journals, JGI requires the corresponding author to sign a copyright transfer agreement on behalf of all the authors at the time of submission. Unless this agreement is executed JGI will not publish the article.
Conflict of Interest
All authors are expected to disclose any commercial affiliations as well as consultancies, interests and patent-licensing issues that could be considered to pose a conflict of interest regarding the submitted manuscript.
To protect the privacy of individuals mentioned in clinical studies, in case histories, and as sources of isolates, do not identify them by their initials, even as part of a strain designation. Change the initials to numerals or use randomly chosen letters. The written informed consent should be taken from the patient or guardian, if identifying information of the patient is essential for scientific purpose in the publication. Written consent in such cases should be indicated in the article and copy of the consent should be sent to the editor along with covering letter.
2. TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS AND LIMITS
Submission Articles in the following categories are published:
Original Articles: Cover topics relevant to clinical and basic studies in the areas of gastrointestinal infections. Both adult and pediatric problems are included and clinical studies relevant to the care of critically ill patients may be submitted for publication. (Maximum 3000 words excluding about 30 references and structured abstract).
Review articles: Current topics which are usually those specially requested by the editorial board from persons who have done substantial work on the given subject. (Up to 4000 words excluding about 90 references and abstract)
Case Reports: New/interesting/ rare cases can be reported. (Up to 1000 words excluding about 10 references and abstract)
Brief communication: Study with clinical interest or unusual presentation of a disease can be sent. (Up to 1500 words and 10 references). Illustrations and tables, when included, should be limited to one each. It should have an abstract limited to 100 words.
Correspondence: Correspondence offers opinions on papers published in Journal of Gastrointestinal Infections. It should be limited in length to 300 words and should be continuous without headings. It should not include more than 5 references and one table or figure. Letters commenting on papers are sent to the authors of those papers for a response.
Research News Scan: Peer-reviewed research news and scientifically credible information concerning human health and medical science. (Up to 1000 words excluding about 10 references)
3. SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPT
All manuscripts submitted for publication to the Journal of Gastrointestinal Infections should include the following:
4. PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPT
Manuscripts should be presented in a concise form, typewritten in American format of English language, Times Roman Font size 12 and in double space. Names of organisms, et al, in situ, in vitro, in vivo should be typed in italics. Names of antibiotics should begin with small case, not capitals. Do not disclose identity/ institute name in the Materials and Methods or anywhere else in the Article file. Pages should be numbered consecutively and the contents arranged in the following order:

Article type: Review/Original Article, Brief Communication, Case Report, Correspondence
Title: The title of the article, which should be concise, but informative and yet sufficiently descriptive.
Running title: A short running title not exceeding 6-7 words/ 50 characters may also be provided (except for case report or correspondence).
Name(s) of the author(s), Department(s) and Institution(s) to which the work should be attributed.
Name, Address, Phone number, Fax, e-mail address of the Corresponding author.
2. Abstract: All manuscripts should have a structured abstract (of no more than 150 words for brief reports and 250 words for original articles and other article types) with subheadings of Background and objectives, Material and Methods, Results, Interpretation and conclusions. The abstract should not be structured for a case report (100 words), review article 250 words) and brief communication (150 words). Do not include references in abstract.
3. Keywords: 3 to 8 keywords, arranged alphabetically.
4. Introduction: Brief, most recent essential background only.
5. Materials and Methods: IRB/ EC approval is mandatory for all studies involving human subjects and animal ethics clearance for experimental animals. Source of reagents/ commercial kits, manufacturer name, city and country should be clearly mentioned. Statistical test used should be mentioned.
6. Results: Only such data as are essential for understanding the discussion and main conclusions emerging from the study should be included. Present your results in a logical sequence in the text, tables, and illustrations, giving the main or most important findings first. Do not repeat in the text all the data in the tables or illustrations; emphasize or summarize only important observations. Do not duplicate data in graphs and tables. Interpretation of the data should be taken up only under the Discussion and not under Results.
7. Discussion: The discussion should deal with the interpretation of results without repeating information already presented under results. Include summary of key findings (primary outcome measures, secondary outcome measures, results as they relate to a prior hypothesis); strengths and limitations of the study, what this study adds to the available evidence, effects on patient care and health policy, possible mechanisms); controversies raised by this study and future research directions (for this particular research collaboration, underlying mechanisms, clinical research). The conclusions can be linked with the goals of the study but unqualified statements and conclusions not completely supported by hx- should be avoided. Claiming of priority on work that is ongoing should also be avoided.
8. Conflict of interest: It is mandatory for all manuscripts to mention conflict of interest if any or if none then mention must be made to that effect. Manuscripts without this statement will not be processed.
9. Acknowledgement: Acknowledgment should be brief and made for specific scientific/technical assistance and financial support only and not for providing routine departmental facilities and encouragement or for help in the preparation of the manuscripts (including typing or secretarial assistance).

11. References: Bibliography should list references in order of their appearance in the text (not alphabetically) and should follow PubMed Central guidelines along with Vancouver style. Visit the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) website: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/pmcdoc/tagging-guidelines/article/style.html, and search for specific reference citations under the section 'Fully-Tagged Citations'. Point 2.3 needs to be followed. All references must be cited in the text in superscript. The examples of the references have been mentioned below:

Place the number of the references at the end of the sentence in superscript to which the reference is related. Use commas to separate multiple reference numbers. For example: 'bond strength of composite resin to dentin is influenced by the presence of a smear layer.4,5,8-15
If more than one reference is contained in a sentence, then number the reference immediately following the text that refers to the reference.
For example: Bailey2 found that 46% showed signs of metastasis while Varner3 found only 28%.
Tables should be self-explanatory and should not duplicate textual material. Tables should be typed separately and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals (1,2,3, etc). They should bear brief title and column headings should also be short. Units of measurement should be abbreviated and placed below the headings. Statistical tests should be clearly mentioned with exact p values. Measurement variations such as SD and SE should be numbered. Inclusion of structural formula in Tables should be avoided. Also, Tables should not be submitted as photographs.
ILLUSTRATIONS AND FIGURES
Illustrations should be submitted electronically in both (JPEG Format and word format), numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. Letters, numbers and symbols should be clear in the figures and of sufficient size, so that when reduced, they could be accommodated without loss in clarity. Titles and explanation of symbols in the legends for illustrations should be typed on separate pages. Symbols, arrows or letters used in photographs should contrast with the background. If photographs of patients are used, either the subjects must not be identifiable or their pictures must be accompanied by written permission to use the photograph.
The Journal reserves the right to crop, rotate, reduce, or enlarge the photographs to an acceptable size. If a figure has been published elsewhere, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the material. A credit line should appear in the legend for such figures.
Abbreviations should be used as an aid to the reader, rather than as a convenience for the author, and therefore their use should be limited. Only standard abbreviations should be used. Define each abbreviation and introduce it in parentheses the first time it is used. The title of the article should not contain abbreviations. The abbreviations should be used in the text, tables and illustrations without a full stop.
Statistical analysis of data is a crucial component of scientific publication. Authors who are unsure of proper statistical analysis should have their manuscripts checked by a qualified statistician. Copyright

All accepted manuscripts and their accompanying illustrations become a permanent property of the journal and may not be published anywhere in part or full, in print or electronically without written permission from the journal.
